Part 1 of 8

"Isn't This Just Normal College Stuff?"

Not all substance use is the same — and lumping it all together is exactly why parents miss real warning signs. Here's the actual ladder professionals use.

MYTH

"If they're not drinking every day, it's not a real problem."

FACT

Binge drinkers often go weeks between episodes — infrequency doesn't mean it's safe. It's a myth that only daily drinkers have an alcohol problem.

The four stages, defined simply

These are the actual terminology categories professionals use — a ladder, not a light switch.

1

Drug Use

Taking a substance for its intended purpose, appropriately — like a prescribed medication, taken as directed.

2

Drug Misuse

Unintentional or inappropriate use (wrong dose, wrong timing) that ends up causing harm.

3

Drug Abuse

A pattern causing real consequences: missed classes, legal trouble, risky situations.

4

Drug Dependence

Now called substance use disorder — continued use despite serious consequences, needing more to get the same effect, feeling unwell without it.

The takeaway

A single misuse incident calls for a conversation. Signs of dependence call for professional help. Treating both the same way helps no one.
